Been procrastinating for the longest time most probably because I had a companion at home (two unemployed at home can be very bad)
I'm a foodie type of people so here I come out with a list of Pontianak food. Probably some you can only find it in Indonesia. Some are delicious while some are below my acceptation, it's so much depends on each individual taste and preference.
1. Kikil
They told me it's cow skin. I had a hard time chewing and digest it. The people there love this I guess, I saw it quite a few times in some dishes. But I only tried it once on the first week. It's below my acceptance especially when I was told it's cow skin!
2. Mie Sagu (Sago Noodles)
This is cheap noodles found beside Kapuas river stall, cost only Rp 5000 for one bowl. Worth trying, it's different from other noodles you found here in the city. Main ingredients include anchovies, bean sprouts, chives, and most importantly the semi transparent noodles made from sago. This is good and very cheap (price of a pack of nasi lemak in Malaysia)!
3. Mie Ayam (Chicken Noodles)
The noodles texture is like wan tan mee, dried noodles as well but not exactly similar, I couldn't really tell the difference but it's different. It's top with chicken minced and served with deep fried cracker. This huge portion of mie ayam cost only Rp 12000 which is really cheap!
4. Yam Mie
Ordered this in a random Chinese coffee shop, it tasted so so. As far as I know, this is popular among the Chinese in Pontianak, I probably ordered at the wrong shop. This bowl price at Rp 20000.
5. Kwetiau
This is another famous dish among the Chinese there. Okay, it wasn't the char kway teow taste you find it in Malaysia. It's totally a different type of noodles I suppose, the texture is totally different although by view it looks really alike the one we had back here. Again I prefer the kway teow in Malaysia, maybe I'm already familiar with the taste. But why not the try, this bowl cost Rp 20000 from Apollo.
6. Bakso Mie
Missing this the most, bakso noodles! This is selling literally everywhere either beside the street or in a proper restaurant. It's soup noodles with beef meatball. This bowl of goodness cost can range from Rp 14000 to Rp 30000. The one below cost me Rp 19000 together with the ice tea, damn worthy introduced by Thanh. It comes together with different types of bakso including the one with an egg in it. Most of the local people eat it with additional of lots of sauce, they provide black thick sauce and also chilli sauce making their bowl of soup noodles either black or red.
7. Bakso Telur
This is the most common ones. They have some others like bakso urat (beef intestine meatball). From the picture, the front one is egg bakso and the back one is mushroom bakso. This two bakso cost me Rp 15000. If to choose, I prefer the earlier ones, much worthy :P
8. Ko Kue
Fried radish cake, tasted similar like the char kway kak we had in Malaysia. It was bought by Red and Ani from Jalan Gajah Mada which is known as the Chinese street.
9. Gaduh-gaduh
This is good with the peanut sauce! Serving with lontong (sticky rice), noodles, egg, tofu and vegetables. I love how all these combine perfectly with each other. This plate is made by Amat's mum, they are selling it. Thanks for the treat :)
10. Nasi Ayam Geprek
This is the dish that is most common eaten throughout my exchange, as this restaurant, Roemah Eyang is selling it cheap, one plate at Rp 15000. And you get to choose the spiciness of the smashed chicken ranging from 0 to 20 (but I saw some choose 50, you can challenge that if you are someone who likes spicy food :P) I usually go for spiciness level 2-5 :) Apart from cheap, this actually tastes good! Just that as a traveller, you opt to try more variety of other dishes in a foreign country.
11. Nasi Goreng
This is actually good too! Not like in Malaysia we had different types of fried rice to opt such as nasi goreng kampung, nasi goreng cina, nasi goreng kunyit, nasi goreng paprik and etc. In Indonesia, they had only pure nasi goreng and the taste varies for different stall. It top with grounded chicken, a little cucumber at the side and extra omelet. This plate cost Rp 18000 together with a cup of ice tea.
12. Nasi Goreng Seafood
You can only find this in seafood restaurant. Rizqi seafood restaurant is Loy and Red favourite! They go there super often and even takeaway and eat it in the airport (and I mean Red eat it in Malaysia airport and Loy eat it in Guangzhou airport), that's insane! This bowl cost Rp 20000.
13. Nasi Ayam
Note that this is not halal. Their chicken rice is served with different varieties of pork which include three layer pork, char siew and some I couldn't name XD Other than that, there's pickled vegetables, cucumber and spiced corned egg. But the Chinese dish here is expensive! This big portion of serving cost Rp 32000 with ice tea.
14. Lontong Sayur
Ordered this dish because I had too much of chicken :P This dish with slight taste of coconut milk curry actually do have chicken too but sort of steamed ones :P With a lot of onion, radish, vegetables and lontong (sticky rice) of course! Ate this in Roemah Eyang too, with ice tea cost Rp18000.
15. Sayur Asem, Tofu & Tempeh
This is cooked by the committees in a cooking competition. My group masterpiece! These 3 dishes are very often cooked at home. To cook sayur asem, you need to have corn, nut, long bean and labu (which I still don't know what is that). Tofu and tempeh is presented by frying. Our team win the first prize :)
16. Es Kopyor
Made with mixtures of syrup to the water, served with coconut and frog egg. Taste good :)
17. Aloe Vera
This is famous and you got to buy the ready-to-drink ones in all places. My host mum had that in the refrigerator and I get to drink that when I wish :) I even visited the plantation with fellow AIESECers.
18. Asiang Coffee
This coffee shop has a long history opening since 1958, it's the third generation now according to Dandy, his favourite place, he comes here almost every day I suppose. But this cup of coffee is a little too sweet for my liking but overall it's still good. Rp 7000 per cup. I had a very good chat with Dandy with this cup of coffee, I gain a lot from you, thanks Dandy for that treat too.
19. Aming Coffee
Another famous coffee shop in Pontianak is this. The coffee here is good, they even put a coffee bean into your cup not sure it's for decoration or to have more coffee smell. Thanh loves this. This shop has wider space as compared to the previous ones and opens longer hour, it provides wifi too! But this cup of coffee is slightly pricey cost Rp 9000 per cup.
20. Fried Banana with Srikaya
Had ice milk coffee I been craving for. They normally serve plain coffee which is our Kopi-O here, you need to particularly order kopi susu. Fried banana is everywhere here. This particular shop Warung Minuman Suka Hati is famous with their fried banana served with srikaya, they served also toast bun. Most of the stall or restaurant sells the fried banana either plainly or top with cheese. Some also served it with condensed milk and sugar. The combination is weird but Indonesian seems to eat it that way. My bill comes at the price of Rp 13000 for a cup of ice milk coffee and fried banana with srikaya.
21. Fruit Soup
This is good! All fruits such as waternelon, longan, apple and etc are placed in a cup with coconut milk bought by Fay :)
22. Chai Kue
Had this in D Bamboo, the famous shop. It tasted almost the same like in Malaysia except that they had four types of fillings which are sengkuang, taro, peanut and chives. Each costing Rp 1100. Tried the fried ones (bottom) too but steamed ones taste a lot better. Fried one is in a set of 5 selling at Rp 10000.
23. Empek-empek
This particular one is kapal selam besar, fried fish cost Rp 17000.
24. Otak-otak
Tried also the fish otak-otak here, the same stall. It taste different from Malaysia and I prefer Malaysia ones :P
25. Satay
Satay kambing (sheep) cost Rp 30000 for 10 sticks.
26. Perkedel
Fried potato like the one I usually had in Malay stall in Malaysia just that the shape is different, This is presented in cylinder shape while Malaysia ones is more like an oval shape. Both taste a lot similar. This ones here sell at Rp 4000 per piece. I'm eating this with nasi uduk which is rice with coconut milk that cost Rp 3000 for half a bowl.
27. Gorengan
This is their typical snacks that sells beside the street. You can eat it in the morning, tea time or supper. Usually cost Rp 800 - 2000 per pieces. The one I bought here is tofu and sengkuang. They had othre varities too which I tried for supper one night.
28. Frog and Snake
This is some special food selling at Gajah Mada street. Found out that this is quite common, they even cook it at home. But after living for 24 years, this is my first time trying frog and snake. We ordered it both in soup and fried forms. Snake is still alright for me cause it's already deformed and looks a lot like fish, tasted like one too. But frog really took me some time to actually chew on it, the leg are obviously there but the meat is really chewy. The price for fried dish is Rp 17000 for each and soup dish Rp 25000 each.
29. Fried Ice Cream
This tasted so so, my supper the other day. The bread is thick. This cost Rp 12000.
30. Coconut Ice Cream
This is the good ones and not to be missed! I almost miss this coconut ice cream selling at Petrus, the shop named Es Krim Angi. Went there twice and it's closed, you got to come here early before 4pm. There's several flavour to opt such as vanilla, chocolate, green tea, strawberry, etc and all taste good. There's grass jelly at the bottom and it cost Rp 20000.
31. Ce Hun Tiau
This is good introduced by the students from IBS I went for presentation and chit chat session. This is A Hau ones, even the name is given by them. Love the food list, get to try a lot more Pontianak food, thanks guy! This bowl is a mixture of cincau, jelly and beans with ice and some syrup. Taste really good costing Rp 8000 a bowl.
32. Bubur Pedas
This is good too! Loving this bowl of food a lot, it's not spicy at all and isn't really porridge type, I guess it's just the name. So many spinach in it serving with anchovies, nuts, onion, lime and some unknown ingredient. Cost only Rp 8000 per bowl. A must try!
